In Partnership with NexSpring

Bringing the Next Generation of Embryo Imaging to the IVF Lab

We are proud to be developing LANTERN in partnership with NexSpring, makers of the BT-37 benchtop incubator. This collaboration — announced at ESHRE 2026 — brings together NexSpring's world-class incubation hardware with Demeter's computational imaging and AI platform, creating a fully integrated solution designed for the IVF laboratory environment.

LANTERN integrates directly into the BT-37. Embryos are never moved. Culture conditions are never disrupted. The imaging is continuous — from fertilisation through blastocyst.

Why biology comes first

The imaging is new. The biology is decades in the making.

Every imaging platform in embryology faces the same question: once you can see more, how do you know what matters?

For most approaches, the answer is pattern recognition — training algorithms on embryos that did or didn't implant, and letting the model find correlations. That produces a score. It doesn't produce understanding. And it is often incorrect.

LANTERN is built differently. Our AI is trained on specific, annotated biological events — identified and labeled by embryologists working at the forefront of human developmental biology. Every insight traces back to a biological observation a clinician can examine and interrogate.

That is what makes it explainable. And explainability is what makes the tool trustworthy in the hands of an embryologist.

The biology defines the features

LANTERN's imaging captures quantitative physical measurements that correspond to known biological events in embryo development. We measure what matters, because we know what to look for.

The embryologists define the labels

Our dataset is built on annotations by specialist embryologists with deep expertise in human embryo development. The AI learns from expert biological judgment — not from outcomes alone.

The clinician retains the decision

LANTERN surfaces biological insight. It does not make the selection. Every output is designed to support — and be scrutinized by — the embryologist who knows their patient.

How it works

A Platform Built on Better Science

Demeter's advantage begins with imaging that reveals more — and compounds at every step through biology, AI, and clinical output.

Quantitative insights to support clinical judgement

Superior imaging

Our platform captures what conventional microscopy cannot — giving our biology team a fundamentally richer dataset to work from.

Biology-first AI

Our AI is trained to evaluate biological features that conventional systems cannot access — using biologically grounded criteria shaped by expert embryologists, not black-box correlations alone.

Compounding advantage

As our dataset grows, so do our biological insights — and our model improves under expert supervision, not unsupervised automation.

The Lantern Platform

Understanding the Embryo in Four Dimensions

Conventional embryo assessment is limited to what a microscope captures using moving lenses and stages to physically focus on individual planes. LANTERN changes that — built on computational microscopy techniques pioneered by Prof. Changhuei Yang, it reconstructs the full 4D architecture of a living embryo without staining, without moving lenses, and without disrupting the culture environment. Clinicians gain a new way to see not just what an embryo looks like, but how it is built.

Development Timeline

Inside the Window That Changes Everything

The days between fertilization and implantation are among the most consequential — and least understood — in human biology. Demeter is built to illuminate this critical window: capturing how each embryo develops, moment by moment, to help clinicians identify those with the greatest potential for a healthy pregnancy.
